The Simmons SDSV is supposed to be the mother of all electronic drums as it has been the first one that had been produced in a noticable number (between 1981 and 1984). The characteristic hexagonal shaped drum pads conquered the stages all over the world at the beginning of the 80s. This movie gives you a slight impression about the capabilities of the SDSV
So here’s the backstory: I was planning on recording a whole slew of drum covers today, but since people bailed on me and I wasn’t able to get the cameras necessary (left with 0 legit cameras) I was pretty bummed. I ended up setting up my new laptop, recording into PhotoBooth with the EyeSight camera and recording the audio in my desktop computer via a 3.5mm cable. The drumming, I will admit, could be improved in parts. I’m still adjusting to having my own kit finally (had 10 months without a kit and have only had this for 3 weeks as of the posting date). But I am confident enough with the song to put it up temporarily. I will be re-covering this song when I get my full camera rig set up
The biggest thing I want to get across in these videos is the quality of Jobeky Electronic Drums. The kit I own is called the Cobus Potgieter SDG signature kit. My personal kit is modified from his but if you are interested in any of Jobeky’s kits, or even just individual drums (they do both!) please contact them. The owners are amazing to deal with and come on you can’t say you didn’t think that was an acoustic kit at first… not until after you saw the TD-20 module sitting behind me
PLEASE check them out, Colin and Jane make amazing electronic drum kits. Jobeky Electronic Drums www.jobekydrums.co.uk

***the best electronic drum kit ever***
@SippRider89 About 3000 SDSV kits had been produced until 1983. Sometimes they appear on Ebay, but they are pretty sought-for
is the SDSV kit still available today? it seems as if every kit I’ve looked at lacks the analog sounds of the 80′s kits.
(I wrote a couple of comments in this clip before.) I love those sounds. Would’ve gone for this or an SDS7, but the Yamaha DTXPress IV kit I bought includes great recordings of the Simmons series.
The second part of the demo reminds me of the song “Vienna” by Ultravox.
The sounds remind me of the song”Tonight” by Genesis.
Nice sounds! You can here it on Fiction Factory’s song “Feels like heaven”
Where would be the best place to buy an old Simmons set??
at least a similar sound. The SDS800 exclusively provides analog filters, but they are realised with different/lower quality components compared to the SDSV
I love the sound at 0:49 to 1:35 !! can I get the same sound whit the sds800 ?? thanks a lot !!
Drums like on Being Boiled are actually just simple filtered noise… can be done with many synthesizers…
had one of those back in 1986, remember them hard to program (no synth experiense)
and it hurt like hell in the wrist if you missed the sweetspot
but they were nice to mix into the ordinary drumkit
All these voices are snapshots of the filter settings. The snare sound at 2:27 is much noise and just a very little part of tone (filter “noise tone” balance). Furthermore there is high cut on the noise (filter “noise”). That’s it. You don’t have any named presets in the SDSV
man all that voices/tones have name ??
id like to know the name of the 2:27 voice as my parter below ; )
LOL i lovee so muchh that song
and its to hard to fing a module to have that same song
(
if you know something about let me kno
Hmmmmmmmmm. 1981 was this? Some of the percussive, noise-laden sounds you demonstrate sound EXACTLY as those you can hear on Human League’s classic “Being Boiled”. However, the album “Travelouge” came in 1980 already! So it can hardly be the case they had a SDSV at their disposition at that time…
@falkenlaser: I think you’re thinking of the Simmons’ Clap Trap. It nails that massive sound from the opening of “The Big Money” and “Mystic Rhythms”.
Btw, for the Rush fans in the crowd, I happen to own SDSV #2112.
I have wait for a long long time for THIS demo movie!! Thank YOU!!
Absolutely love these drums! I had a SDS8 with a couple pads I bought off of eBay a few years back. I could never get it to play the snare sound at 2:27, which Neil Peart used a lot in the Power Windows and Hold Your Fire albums.
”’excellent”…..i have…sds8.
My first ever electronic kit was an SDS9 which I bought for £200 in 1991. I loved the way it looked, and still do. However, it didn’t play that well and not only did it not track great but dynamics weren’t realistic at all. I used the pads on an Alesis D4, that was much more the ticket. Even that after a while became limited. My last e-kit was a Ddrum 4 which I had for years, it was awesome to play and sounded great. But I had such a warm feeling watching this vid, so many memories! G Job!
I have had electronic drums SEAK ADM 5 it was similar battery. The sounds are very good – as Simmons sds 5.
(SEAK PREŠOV ELECTRONIC DRUMS -MADE IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA 1989-1990)
I knew that.
in 1995. The last generation of hexagonal pads had been the hexaheads
When did they discontinue the hexagon drums?
@gentibiraci thanks dude, i’m planning on 4-7 camera angles (depending on who i can wrangle up to rent cameras from the school with me in addition to the 3 HD cameras I own just don’t have currently in my possession). excited about that but it may be a few weeks before i can organize that (hopefully just 2 weeks)
good stuff. it sounds good eh, doesn’t it? i wish i could see you from a frontal view, it would add intensity to the video and emotion but with seeing your back it kinda lacks that but as you said yourself, you had nobody to record it with. congrats nevertheless.
